Tourism

The program of Bachelor in Tourism trains professionals with ethics, socially and environmentally responsable with comprehensive knowledge in operations, tourism planning and business tourism to contribute with dinamization of the industry to meet the needs of society and contribute to the change of the production model of the country. Also train comprehensive professionals with relevant knowledge to optimize, plan and evaluate the efficient use of scarce resources, promoting the sustainable development, generating value and reducing uncertainty in the decision making process in the public and private sector.

* Undergraduate tuition/fees:
The Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador in its Article 356, among other principles, establishes that third-level public higher education will be tuition/fees free.  Zero cost education is linked to the academic responsibility of the students.

First Year

Description:

In this course, students apply the Design Thinking methodology to identify, analyze real-life problems or needs, to design innovative solutions. Students work in multidisciplinary teams to present solution proposals that add value to customers/users from private companies, public organizations and non-profit organizations.

Description:

Mathematics is a basic course aimed at the training of professionals in Archeology, Nutrition and Tourism. His program comprises four units: logic and sets, real numbers, and systems of equations, real variable functions, and plane and space geometry. Each unit analyzes the theoretical foundations and their application in problem solving.

Description:

This basic and general education subject presents grammatical structures to produce a simple paragraph based on a writing program. Additionally, it allows the identification of a specific argument in oral and written communication. It also considers learners’ personal opinions about different topics related to social, academic, and professional aspects. It includes the necessary vocabulary to make comparisons between present and past, books or movies description, creation of simple students’ profile, opinions about inventions, formal apologies and tell past events.

Description:

WIth this first semester course from the BA track, studentes will be able to understand how the exact and human sciences relate to geography, how space is addressed from differente subjectivities, and the discourses associated with them. Fundamental issues in Physical and Human Geography, together with tools and methods from Geographical Information Systems (GIS) will be studied.

Description:

This course will study the evolution of the forms of historical knowledge through time, as well as its epistemological and methodological problems and the innovations of contemporary historiography in terms of inclusion of subjects of study and related methodological requirements. It will aim at reconstructing the historical path of Ethnohistory as a field of study within the framework of the approach of Anthropology to History, characterizing specific developments in the study of Andean societies, different research strategies, construction of new categories of analysis and methodologies (selection, analysis and articulation of written, oral and archaeological sources).

Description:

This subject contributes to the initial professional training of the student of the tourism career. It focuses on basic legal knowledge fundamental to entrepreneurship and the management of sustainable tourism activities in Ecuador that are acquired through case studies and exercises oriented towards professional practice. In particular, the needs for the professional future of: framing tourism planning and carrying out of tourist activities in a culture of respect for human rights; obtain and update registrations, permits, licenses tourist and environmental; understand and interpret contracts frequently used in tourism.

Marketing Fundamentals is a mid-level subject of the Business Administration career, to which the student arrives with the ability to understand the consumer from a microeconomic perspective, thus also knowing the forces of the environment that influence their consumption decisions. Therefore, to complement the existing knowledge of the students, this course focuses on the consumer's bond with the company, from a relational perspective. For which, the process for the generation of value is studied, for the consumer and for the company, through actions and strategies of product, price, place, and promotion. The focus of the subject is theoretical-practical, with emphasis on the analysis of local business problems through the use of cases and market data.

This basic level professional training subject sets out the main definitions that make up tourist geography, provides students with a broader view of the world tourism from the global concepts of human geography and within this, the geography economical. This allows to analyze the human-space interaction for tourism purposes, using digital and traditional tools to study the large emitting and receiving poles of tourism; the use of geographic resources for tourism purposes; the impact of the weather and climate change in tourism; human mobility; the global geopolitical associations that rule human mobility today.

This initial level course addresses the study of tourism from two perspectives: first, as a contemporary social manifestation and second as an object of research within an academic context. A critical understanding of the main social, economic and environmental problems related to the practice of human mobility is fostered through the study and discussion of the main contemporary debates around the tourism phenomenon. The course analises the history and basic concepts of tourism, the approaches to the study of tourism, as well as its impacts and effects in societies and the environment.

In addition, it allows the identification of specific arguments in oral and written communication, considering the production of one's own criteria on different topics of a social, academic or professional nature. This initial level course studies the decision-making process of economic agents in conditions of scarcity. It also studies the market processes and fluctuations in economic activity. Topics on microeconomics related to goods, market and prices are addressed. Macroeconomic topics such as the analysis of macroeconomic indicators and national income are also analyzed. Finally, the course concludes with a synthesis of the main problems of the economy.

Description:

The course presents students with strategies to solve common problems in various professional fields through the design and implementation of solutions based on the use of a programming language. It covers the basic principles so that the student can read and write programs; emphasizing the design and analysis of algorithms. In addition, it introduces students to the use of development and debugging tools.

In this subject, we study the development of the academic prosumer profile of the students, which should be consolidated throughout each individual's life, based on the processing of complex, holistic, and critical thinking. Description:

This course develops knowledge related to accounting, measuring their effects on the financial statements in order to make business decisions. nitially, the antecedents and fundamentals that support accounting are studied under the regulatory framework. Subsequently, the accounting process is carried out including transaction taxes, legal labor obligations, so that the information obtained is the basis for the preparation of the financial statements of a company. Finally, the impact of: inventory and property, plant and equipment, on business results is evaluated.

This course is introductory and is aimed at third-level students in initial training within their undergraduate career.The units of the course emphasize the importance of administration at all management levels of an organization, provide for a general analysis of the administrative process with a cyclical approach and specific analysis of planning, organization, direction and control functions within this process. Additionally, international regulations are studied to understand actions in the field of safeguarding and asset management of Ecuador. This course is aimed at students of level 300 with the purpose of developing competencies in operations management of manufacturing and service companies. In its contents, linear programming models are developed for decision-making, management of quality management, and quality control. Basic aspects for decision-making, with risk and uncertainty, product and service design, and simulation models applied to inventory management in companies are covered.

Food and Beverage is an intermediate-level professional subject that studies different tools used in this area´s administration; the course focuses on the established policies for managing inventory control and procurement, also applies instruments to analyze food and beverage expenses, identifies the main cooking techniques for national and international culinary preparations, provides knowledge to manage the service area, in addition to understanding the operation of a professional kitchen.

This subject covers the theory of territorial and tourist planning, as well as the socio-political context in which it unfolds. Additionally, land use planning and its relationship with the physical planning of tourism, governance and its applicability are addressed, as well as geographic information systems (GIS) as instruments for territorial analysis.

Description:

The Statistics course provides students with the basic knowledge that will help them convert a data set into useful information for making decisions in scenarios of uncertainty. It encompasses different methods of tabulation and data analysis, the introduction of the concept of probability as a measure of uncertainty and mathematical models of discrete and continuous random variables. Additionally, analysis techniques such as regression and hypothesis testing of population parameters are included.

This course studies the variation of the money value over time, applying the capitalization financial laws and discount at simple and compound interestrates, which allows to find the equivalences between equity and analysis of cash flows, to evaluate saving alternatives, investments and credit to help in the decisionmaking process of personal financial decisions. Financial evaluation techniques such as present value, future value, annual value, and return rates will be applied, as well as the Cost/Benefit ratio for social projects. Being one of the introductory finance courses taught at ESPOL, it is aimed for students in the initial levels.

Description:

This transversal course addresses the conditions required to innovate and the process associated with developing an innovation from an entrepreneurial point of view. Subsequently, topics such as the identification of opportunities, value creation, and prototyping and validation of products/services proposals are reviewed, as well as the elements of the business toghether with tools for the evaluation of a budget/financial management plan and the interpretation of financial data. Considerations that are essential for the feasibility and adoption of an innovation. Finally, entrepreneurial competences and process associated with the development and adoption of an innovation are studied.

This advanced course provides concepts, tools and methods of scientific research applicable to the social sciences in general and, in particular, to tourism as an area of study. This intermediate level professional training course addresses tourism planning methods understood from a systemic, territorial and socio-political perspective. The course addresses how to articulate development objectives with the planning and implementation process, depending on the socio-political context, the planning scale and the type of space (urban or natural). Finally, tools for analysis and management of urban and natural landscapes are applied that respond to principles of cooperation, citizen participation, transparency, sustainability, use of technology, interculturality and equity.

This transversal training course for all students of the institution has five chapters. It introduces the key principles of sustainability and the path to sustainable development. Addresses ecological principles by deepen into biodiversity, ecosystems, human population and ecosystem services. Study the fundamentals of renewable and non-renewable resources as well as the alternatives for sustainable use. Analyzes environmental quality specifically in the air, water and soil components, delving into issues such as climate change, eutrophication and deforestation. This subject is of professional training for students of the Bachelor's degrees in Tourism and Business Administration. The subject introduces the participant systematically and integrally in all aspects of project management, as well as fostering successful behavioral skills to present, lead, and derive benefits from projects. Project management is an interdisciplinary activity that must be aligned with the organizational strategy and therefore identify the different roles, approaches and change management needed to achieve the desired objectives in its implementation.

Description:

In this last academic unit before his/her graduation, the student carries out a project to demonstrate professional skills acquired throughout the academic curriculum. Student engages in processes of creativity and planning as part of a professional design experience on the field. In the first part of the unit, the client/user/audience's needs are identified, the problem/opportunity is defined, data is collected, and critical factors are analyzed to build a point of view. In the second part of the unit, alternative solutions are created. Regulations and restrictions of end-users are considered. The project concludes with the design and / or implementation of the feasible solution or prototype, analysis and validation of results.

The Capstone Project is a culminating requirement for graduation. These projects provide students with the experience of applying acquired knowledge and skills to the needs of society, with a focus on sustainability.
The IDEAR Fair showcases all Capstone projects, offering students a valuable opportunity to showcase their work and hone soft skills such as communication and teamwork. It is also a space for students to network with potential clients and future employers.
